Excellent problem-solving skills are very essential, along with having good math and physics knowledge. There are specific courses you will need to take in order to become an engineer, some of which are nuclear, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Earning a bachelor’s degree in science is an excellent start to becoming a civil engineer. Many people continue to further their education by getting a master’s degree, which will open up higher-level career opportunities.

Office job or On-Site?

There are several types of civil engineers today. One example is a structural engineer. Being a structural engineer involves learning the design of building structures and making sure that they make sure the buildings are sturdy and safe for the economy. Transportation engineering is the most disciplined in engineering. Transportation engineers are responsible for roadways and airports all over. If you like a mental challenge, then working in the office designing building structures, and serving clients may be the path you want to take. In addition, this could open you up for travel opportunities working on projects abroad.

Full Time or Part-Time

Depending on what type of engineer you are or the state you live in can vary with the hours and travel. Most engineers work between 40-60 hours a week. Some engineers work in the office, usually maintaining a regular 9-5 Monday-Friday workweek, with an occasional weekend! However, if you are using your engineer degree for a position working on-site, you can expect to do at least 40 hours a week, including weekends regularly.
